Q: WHAT DOES IT COST?
A: Prices vary depending on which van, how long for, and when you're booking. For an accurate instant quote, go to Book page and enter your dates into the calendar. The price will show below the calendar.
Q: DO YOU CHARGE EXTRA OVER A CERTAIN MILEAGE?
A: Yes. 100 miles per night of your booking is included, any excess over that is chargeable at 15 pence per mile, which is deducted from your security deposit. For example if you book 7 nights and cover 800 miles, then the charge is for 100 miles (£15).
Q: CAN I BRING MY DOG?
A: You can bring up to two well behaved dogs at a charge of £30 per dog.
Q: WHEN ARE YOUR CAMPERS AVAILABLE?
A: On the Book page you'll find a calendar which shows when each van is free, and where you can also find the cost for your dates.
Q: WHAT DRIVING LICENCE DO I NEED?
A: No, all our vehicles can be driven on a normal UK driving licence. ALL drivers must be aged between 30 and 75 (inclusive) or 25-75 (inclusive) for Clio and Piglet. All drivers must hold a licence showing they are able to drive a UK category B Vehicle up to 3500kg GMW. We cannot rent to drivers with more than 6 points on their licence, or have a AC BA CD DD DG DR IN LC MR MS MW TT or UT conviction, or been suspended in the last 8 years. If you have a single 4-point endorsement please contact us before booking.
We accept EU driving licences which allow driving of a 3500kg GMW vehicle; drivers who have lived in the UK for under 12 months will need to present their passport.
Unfortunately we cannot accept USA, Canadian or South African licences as our insurer will not cover these. If you are in the US Air Force please contact us, we may be able to obtain an exception for you.
Q: WHERE CAN I FIND YOUR FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS?
A: On the Resources page.
Q: IS THERE A DEPOSIT?
A: Yes, a £1000 deposit must be paid at collection. This must be in cleared funds and can be paid by bank transfer or debit / credit card. This will be refunded within 2 days of your return, less any breakages or costs for repair of damage, unless we are waiting for a damage repair quote. If you paid by card, we will send you proof of refund within 2 days but allow up to 10 working days for it to appear in your account. If you paid by bank transfer, it'll be back in your account on the day you return the van.
Q: IS INSURANCE EXTRA?
A: No. Fully comprehensive insurance is included for two drivers in the UK and Northern Ireland. For travel to Europe the following countries are included in our insurance and breakdown cover: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eire, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Vatican City. The only additional charge for travelling to Europe is a one-off £15 admin charge for your VE103 insurance certificate which is required for taking any UK hire vehicle into Europe. You should take out your own travel insurance as ours doesn't cover you for medical expenses, death, personal injury or repatriation costs.
Q: WHAT IS THE INSURANCE EXCESS?
A: The excess is £1500. This is the maximum amount you will have to pay in the event of damage to the motorhome, it fittings or contents. If the repair cost is below £1000 we will refund you the difference by whatever method you used to pay the deposit. If the repair cost is between £1000 and £1500 we will retain your security deposit in full and charge you the additional cost, which can be paid by bank transfer or card.
Q: DO YOU SELL EXCESS PROTECTION INSURANCE?
A: No. We suggest buying an insurance policy to repay you the excess if you have an incident. We'll give you a receipt for the repair cost you've paid, and you claim it back from the insurer.
- If your holiday is more than 9 nights, or if you will be hiring a car or motorhome anywhere in Europe within 12 months of the start of this holiday, we recommend the RAC excess policy. - though they only cover up to £1000 for motorhomes so you still have up to £500 liability. The cover rises to £6000 for car hire. See Car Hire Excess Insurance | Rental Protection Cover | RAC. Be sure to select an ANNUAL policy, and then after you click 'Buy Now' add the Motorhome option (£29.99). They don't do short term cover for motorhomes.
- If your holiday is shorter than 9 nights, or if you want to fully cover your £1500 liability, take out a 'daily' policy with RentalCover.com which just covers you for the time you're hiring from us. If you're booking for fewer than 9 nights then this is cheaper than the RAC. It covers excesses up to £2000, so our £1500 is covered entirely. Link here: RentalCover.com. Where it says 'In which country are you renting your vehicle', if you're going abroad then enter your destination country (it's badly worded) - you're covered for driving in the UK and to (and in) your destination country. Also be sure to change the type of vehicle to 'Motorhome/RV'. Cover for loss of keys up to £300 is included.
Q: WHAT'S PROVIDED AND WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
A: On the Resources page you'll find a pdf document showing everything that's included, and a checklist of things you may want to bring. You'll need to bring your own bedding, but we can provide pillows.
Q: ARE THESE VEHICLES DIFFICULT TO DRIVE?
A: Clio, Piglet, Tigger and Hugo are small vans and easy to drive for anyone who's comfortable with a large car. Goose and Rooster are longer and need a confident driver who's driven vans before, but they are not difficult to drive.
Q: WHAT ABOUT WATER AND THE TOILET?
A: You'll need to fill up your fresh water tank and empty your grey water tank (water from the shower and basins) every 2-3 days depending on how much you use the shower. Fresh water just needs an outside tap, so a camp site, friendly pub or garage (with permission) works. If you're using eco-friendly shower gel and hand soaps then your grey water can be discharge anywhere, but seek permission on private land and consult camp sites on disposal. Your toilet waste needs to be disposed of into a sewerage system, typically either at a camp site or at a public toilet. Clio doesn't have a bathroom so the water just supplies the sink and a small outdoor hand-held shower, fed from a canister you fill directly from any tap.
Q: WHAT ABOUT POWER - DO I NEED A HOOKUP?
A: All vans have a leisure battery which runs all your systems such as heating, hot water, lights and USB charging points. The battery is charged when driving, and when hooked up at a camp site. In addition, all our vans have a solar panel which will also keep the battery topped up provided there aren't several very gloomy days in a row. Finally, hairdryers and toasters do not work unless you are hooked up (though you can do toast under the gas grill on all vans except Clio and Piglet). Clio's microwave only works on hookup.
Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY VEHICES WITH AUTOMATIC GEARBOXES?
A: Both Hugos and both Roosters are automatic, the others are manual. For 2025 Goose will also be an automatic.
Q: DO I NEED LEVELLING BLOCKS?
A: Levelling blocks are essential if you're parked on unlevel ground. They are heavy-duty plastic ramps that you can drive onto, on one or two of the wheels. We include levelling blocks with each van at no extra charge.
Q: IS THERE A WIND-OUT AWNING FOR SUN SHADE?
A: Hugo1, Rooster1, Rooster2 and Goose have a wind-out awning.
Q: IS THERE A DRIVE-AWAY AWNING TENT?
A: Yes, you can hire a 3x3m wide inflatable awning tent called a Vango Jura to fit Hugo4, Rooster1, Rooster2 and Goose . The cost is £20 per night. It takes 30-45 minutes to put up so is best for breaks where you're staying in one place at least a few days. You can detach it from the van and leave it at the camp site when you want to go away for the day. Clio has a simpler side tent also available at £20 per night which takes about 20 minutes to put up.
Q: WHAT IF I BREAK DOWN?
A: Breakdown cover is included in your price and covers all of the UK and Europe. If you have a puncture they will deal with it but it's chargeable (unless you took our their excess insurance) - it may be quicker to find someone local.
Q: WHEN DO I HAVE TO PAY THE BALANCE?
A: The deposit is 25% payable at booking, the balance is due 8 weeks before departure. If you book less than 8 weeks before you're leaving, the whole amount is due at booking.
Q: WHAT IF I HAVE TO CANCEL?
A: The deposit is not refunded. If you cancel between 8 weeks and 2 weeks before your departure date, 50% of the total holiday cost is payable. If you cancel less than 2 weeks before your departure date or don't turn up, the whole cost is payable. We'll always try to sell your dates again and if we do, we'll refund you for the dates we re-sold.
Q: WHAT IF THERE'S A LOCKDOWN?
A: Let's hope we're past those, but if there is a lockdown in our area which prevents you from picking up your vehicle, or you can't leave your home because your area is locked down, then you'll get a full refund of all monies paid and the contract will be cancelled.
Q: CAN I TAKE BIKES?
A: All of our vans have the option to add a bike rack for £6 per night. On Clio, Piglet, both Hugos and Froggy it carries 2 bikes, on Goose and the Roosters it's 4. Goose and the Roosters also have big garages so you might not need one, email frcampers@gmail.com or call us for advice. Electric bikes can't go on bike racks, they are too heavy, but they can go in the garage on Goose and Roosters.
Q: CAN I LEAVE MY CAR WITH YOU?
A: Yes. You can drive to us and offload directly into the camper, leaving the car with us. The car will normally be parked directly outside our industrial unit, though we'll park it inside or at our nearby secure compound if we have space. You'll need to leave us a key as we may need to move it in and out of the unit occasionally as our vehicles are returned. There is no storage charge.
Q: IS THERE A MINIMUM NUMBER OF NIGHTS I HAVE TO RENT FOR?
A: Yes, when you enter the dates on the calendar it'll tell you the minimum number of nights which varies by van and date. All vans are subject to minimum 3 nights year round, some months are 4 nights, and peak times in the bigger vans is 7 nights minimum.
Q: CAN I CHOOSE ANY START DAY?
A: Please see below the calendar on the Book page.
Q: WHAT TIME CAN I COLLECT, AND WHEN DO YOU NEED IT BACK?
A: Collection is from 2pm on the departure day (but please see next question about handover training), and we need the vehicle back by 11am on your return day. However we'll do our best to give you flexibility on this - it all depends on whether the vehicle is out leading up to, and following on from your holiday. We may be able to tell you before you book - just email us at frcampers@gmail.co.uk.
Q: WILL YOU SHOW US HOW EVERYTHING WORKS?
A: Yes, we will give you comprehensive handover training and there are guidance cards in the vehicle to remind you. Please note it takes 60-90 minutes to hand over if you don't have previous experience, so if picking up at 2pm please allow to leave up to 3.30pm. However there are also handover videos on each van on the Resources page which will reduce the handover time significantly.
Q: WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?
A: Still working on that. If you know please tell us.
